2018 – Thessaloniki

Coinciding with the Conference on Complex Systems, and profiting the opportunity offered by the presence of a wide variety of experts in different topics in Thessaloniki, we are organising a school for PhD students and early-stage researchers to prepare for such a big event. The school aims to offer young researchers the opportunity to learn new methods, present their work and meet fellow researchers.

The school is going to be a three days informal event to be held the weekend before the CCS’18 conference on September 21-23 2018, with three 3h long courses from prominent senior researchers, flash presentations from the school participants and a day long social event. Everything is being organized to help the participants get the most out of the CCS’18 Conference in Thessaloniki.

The participation fee covers the school, coffee breaks, lunches and the social event on Sunday. The early-bird rate is only 50 EUR (+3.74 EUR Eventbrite fee) and must be paid before July 23. After this date the participant will have to pay the standard rate, which is 70 EUR. We are also offering a limited number of scholarships covering the registration fee and a contribution towards accommodation for three days. If you would like to apply for a scholarship, please register first and then send us an email including a CV and a cover letter by July 23 July 30.

In order to take part in the CCS’18 Warm-up you need to register here

The Speakers

Andrea Baronchelli is a Lecturer in Mathematics at City, University of London and a research fellow of the UCL Centre for Blockchain Technologies. His main interest is to understand and model the emerging global properties of social and cognitive systems. Topics he is currently investigating include the spontaneous emergence of social consensus, the self-organisation of the cryptocurrency ecosystem, human exploration of physical and mental spaces, and collective dynamics in online and offline social networks.

Sandro Meloni is a Staff Researcher (Científico Titular) at the Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems (IFISC) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. His passions include pizza, snowboarding, and doing research on Complex Systems. He mainly focuses on Dynamics on Networks with a special interest for Evolutionary Game Theory and Spreading Processes. In his works he combines the theoretical approaches typical of Statistical Physics with numerical simulations and data analysis. His research has been published in several journals including PNAS, Physical Review X, Physical Review Letters and PLoS Computational Biology.

Elsa Arcaute is a Lecturer in Spatial Modelling and Complexity at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, and Co-Investigator of an EPSRC grant on Digital Economies, and a MacArthur funded research project on Smart Cities. Her research focuses on modelling and analysing urban systems from the perspective of complexity sciences. Her main branches of research are urban scaling laws, hierarchies in urban systems, defining city boundaries, and the analysis of urban processes using percolation theory and networks.

Social Event

This year the social event will take place in Afytos, a small city situated on the northeastern coast of the Kassandra peninsula. The bus will transport all the participants at 9:30 on Sunday, from KEDEA to Afytos. The trip includes a lunch and plenty of time to relax at the sea side. Return journey is planned around 16:00. If you cannot take part in the Warm Up but you still want to join the social event, it is possible by registering here. The cost of social event only registration is 30 EUR.
