Taking advantage of the presence of a wide variety of experts in different topics meeting for the Conference on Complex Systems (CCS), we are organising a two-day informal event for PhD students and early-stage scientists. You will have the opportunity to attend talks by prominent researchers, learn about the scientific and life experience of young and senior colleagues, and – last but not least – have fun and socialise!

Importantly, thanks to the support of the Network Science Institute (NetSI), this edition of the warm-up will be free of charge for anyone attending the main conference!

What?

Here are a few things that you can expect to happen during the event:

  • talks about behind the scenes aspects of scientific work,
  • an interactive workshop on challenging aspects of academia,
  • specifically tailored trivia games,
  • a social event in London (Saturday night)

The sessions will be divided by lunch and coffee breaks that we will provide.

We’ll release the schedule and our list of speakers as soon as we finalise them!

Speakers

Neave O’Clery is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis of University College London. She’ll be with us at the Warm-Up to share with us her experience in working with policy makers as a complexity scientist.

Leto Peel is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Data Analytics and Digitalisation of Maastricht University. The Warm-Up will be the occasion to hear about his experiences and lessons learned from working and interacting across different domains.

Giovanni Petri is a Professor in the Network Science Institute at Northeastern University London. He’ll tell us the tale of how he ended up being at the forefront of the development of higher-order network science, and how he survived to tell it.

More to be announced in the coming weeks!

How?

The event is free if you register to the conference with Early or Regular Fees (not if you select Satellite Only!), so all you need to register to the Warm-Up is your proof of conference fee payment. Please note that accommodation is at your own expense though!

We want to emphasise that our venue this year has limited capacity, and spots are given on a first-come, first-served basis. So register as soon as you can if you want to join us in London!

The event is reserved to Master or PhD students, and postdocs up to 4 years after the date of their defense.
